oh well.. i stumbled upon this while browsing at the Saudi Gazette. read on.

Dates are a must-have Ramadan staple and are exported all over the world by the Kingdom. Recently, a dates festival was organized in Unayzah, north of the Kingdom. Here’s more about the Arabs’ favorite fruit.

1. Dates are believed to have originated around the Arabian Gulf, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 6000 BC. In later times, Arabs spread dates around northern Africa and into Spain, and dates were introduced into California by the Spaniards in 1765.

2. The fruit of the date palm tree is scientifically a drupe, known as a date. They are oval-cylindrical, 3-7 cm long, and 2-3 cm diameter, and come in different shades of brown.

3. Dates are loaded with nutrients: A 100 gram portion of fresh dates is a premium source of vitamin C and supplies 230 kcal (960 kJ) of energy. They are fat free, cholesterol free, and are a good source of fiber. Dates also contain Vitamin A1, B1, B2, B3, B5, C and more than 20 different amino acids, helping us digest and assimilate carbohydrates easier and control blood sugar levels and fatty acids content in our bodies.

4. Dates also have a protective action against diseases. The selenium in dates lowers the risk of cancer and heart diseases, as well as helps us keep our immune systems healthy. As a single date contains around 23 calories, this very low calorie count and the huge amount of healthy substances in dates make them one of the best nutrition sources for a diet plan menu.

5. Dates have been traditionally used for their medicinal benefits. They have a high tannin content and are used medicinally for their cleansing properties. The seed powder is also used in some traditional medicines, the roots are used to fight toothaches and even date pollen has been discovered to yield an estrogenic principle, estrone.

Big Bang: Scientists finished new atom smasher

Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) started up a huge particle-smashing machine on Wednesday, aiming to re-enact the conditions of the “Big Bang” that created the universe. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest and most complex machine ever made and the platform for what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history. Tests conducted inside the tightly-sealed chamber, buried under the Swiss-French border, could unlock the remaining secrets of modern physics and answer questions about the universe and its origins.



The 10 billion Swiss franc ($9 billion) machine’s debut came as a blip on a screen in CERN’s control room, with a particle beam the size of a human hair appearing in the tightly-sealed 27-km (17-mile) circular tunnel. “We’ve got a beam on the LHC,” project leader Lyn Evans told his colleagues, who burst into applause at the news. The several hundred physicists and technicians huddled in the control room later celebrated loudly again when a particle beam completed a trajectory of the accelerator in one direction, a key step a CERN spokeswoman described as “fantastic.” Scientists will next send a beam around the LHC in the other direction to test that the path is clear. Once that is established, it will be possible to send beams in both directions simultaneously to create high-energy collisions at close to the speed of light.

Don La Fontaine, dies at 68

'King Of Voiceovers' Don LaFontaine Dies At 68
LOS ANGELES The "King of Voiceovers" died Monday in Los Angeles at age 68.

Don LaFontaine, whose voice was on nearly 5,000 movie trailers, died this afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, his agent, Vanessa Gilbert, told Entertainment Tonight.

He died of complications from a collapsed lung, ET reported, although the official cause of death was not immediately released.

In addition to being the omnipresent voice on movie trailers, he was also an announcer for Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, as well as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, UPN, TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network, according to ET.

His voice is believed to have been used in hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke and other corporate sponsors, ET reported.

He was also the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards, and recently parodied himself in a Geico insurance commercial -- one of the few times he could be seen as well as heard.

Based on contracts signed, he may have been the single busiest actor in the history of SAG, according to ET.

LaFontaine is survived by his wife, singer/actress Nita Whitaker, and three children.

A night at the movies wouldn't sound the same without that trademark voice. The deep bass, the intense delivery -- it was the signature sound of Don LaFontaine, the "King of Voiceovers", who died at 68 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Monday.

G Chrome: a Pokeball?

Oh yes!

Browser Wars again!
Internet Goliath, Google just released their newest "pokeball" err.. "Chrome" into the wild. It's an Internet browser for everyone. Though in the BETA stage (still being developed; not a Final Release), one should expect bugs (& roaches) while using it. Primary design goals were improvements in security, speed and stability compared to existing browsers. There were also extensive changes in the user interface. Each tab in Chrome is sandboxed into its own process to "prevent malware from installing itself" or "using what happens in one tab to affect what happens in another". --> READ: It's faster and loads tabs quicker than Firefox 3.


And yeah in the first few minutes itself this browser has attracted me a lot. Its for power users like people on WM.

NB: Firefox 3 still at sometime is unresponsive (often hangs up to death) to my ridiculously wild net surfing.
